ESSIC classification of BPS
- The European Society for the Study of Interstitial Cystitis (ESSIC) has created a consensus on criteria, classification and nomenclature1
- BPS can be classified based on morphological findings of bladder biopsy and findings at
cystoscopy with hydrodistention:1
Hunner’s lesions and/or glomerulations = BPS with bladder lesions
a Cystoscopy: glomerulations grade 2-3
b With or without glomerulations
c Histology showing inflammatory infiltrates and/or detrusor mastocytosis
and/or granulation tissue and/or intrafascicular fibrosis
